WINNER!!!

Hi folks!

On Wednesday I posted a little contest for a $50 gift card to B&H photo.

I told you at the time it was just for fun, but what I really wanted was to see how many for reals and trues people were out there reading and I knew if I asked, you wouldn’t really say “HI! It’s ME!”

So I got all sneaky. Heeheeheeeeeeee…..

And also, I wanted to thank you for reading, because who has the best photo viewers on the interwebs? That’s right. ME! I totally do. It’s true.

At any rate, I’m sure you’re wondering — WHO WON?

Well, I went over to random.org and told the fancy thingie over there to pick a number between 1 and 42 (turns out 42 of you hang out here! YAY happy number 42!) And this is what I got:

So then I scrolled down through the (Handily, already numbered!) comments and this is where I ended up:

So, everyone say Go Donna! Thanks for reading Donna! Your gift certificate is on it’s way!

For the rest of you, there will be another random contest in July, so be on the lookout….
And thanks for participating. It was so very much fun (and also, made me very hungry) to read all of your favorites!

Hot Bath

You do not even know how long I had to wait to get this shot without a people in it. And if you look, you can see that someone in a striped shirt was still in it in the lower left hand corner.

Anyway, this is Pompeii’s Forum Baths — the hot bath room.

Have I ever told you people that I took Latin in High School? While other people were taking useful languages like French and Spanish, I was sitting in Latin with five other people suffering through the WORST teacher ever. Needless to say, I didn’t learn much Latin.

However, I DID learn a lot about Roman culture. And the baths were always a bit of a mystery to me. In my head they were a mixture of turkish bath and harem. So it was really interesting to actually be IN one and see the cold bath and the hot bath and the pool and the warming room.

We spent this day practically FRYING as we walked the streets of Pompeii. And when you think Pompeii, you might think “oh, quaint, tiny little town” but I want to say here and now, there is nothing tiny about Pompeii. We spent three hours there and didn’t see 1/10th of the place, I’m sure. There are 12 acres open to the public. I believe that total there is something like 44 acres excavated with more still to be dug up. Not 100% sure of those facts.

Needless to say, the place is HUGE. And AMAZING. Seriously amazing.

Getting to see Pompeii was one of the main reasons we decided to travel to Naples. Naples is not known for being safe, to put it mildly. But we had limited choices due to weather (we wanted to go somewhere sunny and the rest of Europe was rainy) and airfare choices (we are cheap). As far as a city goes, Naples is DIRTY and kind of SCARY and very LOUD. I’m not sure I’m a big fan of all things Italian. Switzerland is much better. Cleaner. Calmer. More civilized.

I really like Switzerland. And spending time in Italy solidified that. But there is so much to see in Italy that it was definitely worth the visit. I could NEVER ever ever live there, though. I would go completely insane in less than a month.

Now he has departed from this strange world a little ahead of me. That signifies nothing. For us believing physicists the distinction between past, present, and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion. ~Albert Einstein

Today would mark my dad’s 55th birthday. Last year on this day, we were blissfully unaware that in one year’s time, we would all be missing the cornerstone of our family. A reminder that each day is it’s own and should be taken as the blessing that it is. To breath deeply of the air around and to take in each moment with joy abundant, for that moment is truly fleeting.

I miss you, Dad.

Silly Faces Image 4

Note: Okay. So what is the plan with these? I was talking with a student about this image a past student had sent me that made me laugh really hard. This image right here to be exact. I believe I asked her to print it really big (like 40×40 and hang it on the ceiling of her guest shower so that her guests would be all happy getting clean and then suddenly glance up and see her staring down at them with this super surprised face and possibly scream and fall over and then laugh and laugh and laugh because that’s just humorous. At least it’s funny to me. Then again, I have a whacked out sense of humor, so what do I know.

Anyway, from that sprang the idea of putting goofy pictures in the bathroom. And then my mom complained because I only have one wall in my house COVERED in pictures. The others are tastefully limited to 2 or 3 in a pleasing arrangement and apparently she wants my house to be wallpapered in photographic images or something.

And then I was working with a student on different ways to edit a photo to give it a different feel and the resulting image was one that I could see hanging in some Pottery Barn Catalog picture of a bathroom.

So I was reminded of all of the above and then realized that the wall across from my guest bathroom loo was BARREN and how funny would it be to have goofy images of my kids on that wall, making faces at the person using the terlet.

And this 2×2 grouping of 10×10 white framed black and white images poppped into my head and the notion was born and now I must do it. I have the images. This one especially speaks to me about bathrooms.

There you have it. That’s what I plan to do with these four images.

Note2: Still hate the new wordpress. What I hate MOST is that the image adding window won’t work right in Firefox. I don’t know why and I’m too busy right now to figure it out, so I have to use Internet Explorer and that just sort of rubs me wrong in a zillion different ways. Not that you care. I’m just sharing for no real reason.
Note3: Terlet. John. Lavatory. Loo. Can. Throne. Head. So many synonyms for toilet, so little time. (Note esp. for mom: I left off crapper and shitcan just for YOU. Oh. Whoops. guess I didn’t. It’s so hard to be a lady these days.)
